Companies presenting: EastWest Timber owns forest concessions in NW Russia, harvests by modern European mechanical means, sells round wood into the Russian domestic market and uses a Russian saw mill to deliver cut timber to its Estonian timber processing facility for export to European and Far East markets. EWT is therefore not affected by Russian roundwood export duties.
Landkom International is an AIM listed company farming wheat and rape on leased acreage in Ukraine. It aims to be farming 350,000 hectares by 2011 and is already ahead of schedule. Half the tonnage expected to be harvested this year has already been sold forward and if the rest obtains good prices profits should reach around £18 millions compared with the forecast of £14.2 million when it listed towards the end of last year.
MagMinerals Potash Corp is a subsidiary of TSX listed MagIndustries Corp and is due to list itself later this year. A feasibility study confirmed the economics of a 34 year mine life for the 600,000 tonnes per year Phase 1 portion of its Kouilou region potash project near Pointe-Noire in the Republic of Congo. It hopes to double the Phase 1 capacity as soon as possible in order to use the extensive resource base more fully.
Plant Impact plc is an AIM listed company which specialises in plant stress relief by providing a new approach to crop nutrition and crop health. It gives growers significantly increased marketable yields, more consistent quality with reduced environmental impact, leading to the ethically grown food demanded by consumers and the food chain. The company is currently in talks with major pesticide and fertiliser manufacturers to improve their products.
Funds:
GAIA Capital Advisors is a Geneva based investment advisory group specializing in emerging markets and natural resources. The recently launched GAIA World Agri Fund will focus on global agriculture in emerging regions. The fund offers investors direct exposure to the global agri space through, not only large caps, but also small, mid cap, IPO and pre-IPO situations. The former Soviet Union, Latin America and Africa are some key regions where the firm operates.
Galtere Farmland Fund is an outgrowth of Galtere's International Fund which was founded in 1999 and now has approximately US$2.5billion under management. It will purchase and operate farmland with a primary focus on the north / central states of Brazil. The excellent growing characteristics of the region means that farms can double – crop, growing rice in the rainy season and soybeans in the dry summer months. The fund will purchase both developed and undeveloped, unimproved agricultural land.

Record food prices have been put on the agenda for the next G8 meeting. It's the first time the G8 group - or General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, as it used to be known – has discussed the issue of food prices in almost 30 years. The International Monetary Fund, meanwhile, warned that food and oil prices “risk becoming a destabilising force in the global economy.” There have been riots in a number of countries, from Bangladesh to Cameroon, and the government in Haiti fell as a result of rice price riots.
The list of soft commodities in which there are futures markets range from sugar to rubber, palm oil to orange juice and corn to coffee, but companies involved in agriprods go an awful lot wider than that. The most vital constituent is water, but this tends just to be placed in a sector called Utilities which includes power generators and electricity suppliers. The need to clean up water to potable and crop irrigation standards is vital in huge countries like China and this means that a whole new generation of companies is developing technology for this purpose.
So how far do we go in defining agriprods? The answer to that is how long is a piece of string. Wine producers, fish meat and vegetable processors and packagers, ranchers, timber companies, fertiliser manufacturers, agricultural machinery, plantations, fruit growers, food wholesalers and retailers, producers of all types of vegetable oil, pesticide manufacturers, arable farmers, livestock farmers, milk producers, fish farming etc etc. As prices of food products rise, more private companies will list in order to capitalise on past achievements and fund future expansion.
It happened in mining. In 2000 there were only ten junior mining companies listed on AIM. Now there are over 200. Back in the 60s the London Stock Exchange had a thriving plantations section which is starting to re-emerge. New Britain Palm Oil is a classic example and it has nearly doubled since listing last year. These rises in food and ancillary products are not a temporary phenomenon. Two of the biggest countries in the world are undergoing industrial revolutions. With more prosperity comes demand for more and higher standard food. Biofuels is another matter and this is the only mention we are likely to make of competition for cultivated acreage for a product that politicians totally misjudged.
